There are three different types of hedge trimmer available
Electric hedge trimmers: These are affordable, lightweight and generally require very little maintenance these trimmers. However the as they require power cables, this could be a potentially hazardous.
Cordless hedge trimmers: As they have no need for petrol they are generally lighter, quieter, environmentally friendly and do not require engine maintenance or trailing cables to worry about. The downside is the initial investment in the batteries and chargers can be fairly high.
Petrol hedge trimmers: These are powerful and as they are not restricted by power supply can be used anywhere. However, petrol is expensive and messy and make the trimmers noisy, heavy and will require regular maintenance.
What to consider when buying a hedge trimmer
While corded and petrol trimmers are powerful, they have their drawbacks. Corded hedge trimmers often need extension cords, limit where they can be used and in what weather conditions and the trailing power cord can be frustrating and potentially dangerous.
Petrol hedge trimmers don’t have the irritation of a cord, but do have the added inconvenience of buying and storing petrol, which is also smelly and a pollutant. They're loud, can be expensive and require the pull start can be temperamental .
Cordless hedge trimmers avoid all these problems. You just add a battery pack and you are away.
Without the cord or a petrol tank, you aren’t limited to where you can cut and they are generally a lot lighter and quieter. Traditionally, these were expensive and less powerful than Petrol, but recent advances have lowered the cost and reduced the gap in performance.
